New Site Launch

11 Apr

Up to now, I have just been redesigning my blog. As you can see, its even more different now. That’s because I have changed my site to actually bring clients :P .

My favourite part of the site has to be the tabbed content on the top-right. It allows me to display a huge amount of information in a small box. These lists were grabbed by using SimplePie, which is without a doubt my favourite way of integrating content (besides WordPress of course).

The homepage is not up properly, and there are tweaks to be fixed. Some of the links may not work, and although I shouldnt let that happen, they are bound to occur. My portfolio is not up yet and my about page is minimally styled. But so far, I think this is the most complete design I have ever made.

Enjoy.

Young Tweeters

9 Apr

Twitter has become a definitive service for the online community. While there is no doubt Twitter’s main demographic is 20 – 35, there has been a surge in the number of young visitors, and whether it is to catch up on the latest tech, sport, news or celebrity talk, I wanted to find out why. So I asked them.

Tommy Collison is the self-proclaimed “Irelands youngest blogger”, but he is also one of the most personal too. He writes on his blog TrustTommy.com daily and at 14 years of age he became an award-winning blogger at the Irish Blog Awards. He tweets about his non-chocolate diet, his drumming and toasters.

Kevin Coleman is Irelands newest young blogger, and at 16 years of age, he set up KevinColeman.ie a blog about sport, social networks and all things funny. He’s an extremely popolar tweeter with just over 500 followers.

N97 – The Ultimate Phone?

6 Apr

nokia-n97-fcc

Wow the N97 looks good, even in pink. These shots we nabbed by Engadget a few hours ago and I cant stop staring at its beauty. Bernie has said positive things about this phone, which should be arriving in Summer 2009.

Specs include:

  • Keyboard
  • HSDPA, WiFi, and Bluetooth radios
  • A-GPS
  • A 3.5mm headjack
  • 32GB (pwoarh!) of memory with microSD slot (48 GB total)
  • 1.5 days of battery with continuous audio playback
  • 5MP Carl Zeiss Camera

Oh and did I mention that it had a 3.5” touchscreen?Indeed Nokia have been working very hard at this. It’s like they took a page out of James May’s book and kept repeating “Poweeeeer!”

My contract with o2 is not up until the summer of 2010 which gives Nokia enough time to lower the price and to give me time to save.

Know Your Enemy

5 Apr

Green Day is the band that started making me think. Before that I was just like any other teenager. I listened to Eminem, I had my hair shorter than Verne Troyer, and unknowingly I was *gasp* mainstream.

I was thirteen, hormones, testosterone and all that. Picked up American Idiot in Tesco for €14.99 (a lot of money for me, even now) and played it on my CD player when I got home. It expressed me well, showing political anger with people of the US for electing the lovechild of King Kong and Sandra Bullock, and helped me vent my boredom in the Limerick suburbs.

Now I’m a bit older, I don’t listen to them much. Its not that I don’t like them anymore, it’s just that I like different things. I’ve evolved and varied into different styles of music, some of which were songs I actually couldn’t listen to when I was 14. I don’t mind good Electronic music anymore. But I’m going off the point now :P

Green Day’s latest record “21st Century Breakdown”, an album that kicks off in May 2009 should be interesting for me at least. This being my first favourite band’s newest album, I want to see if a group can successfully grow up along with the audience it played for back in 2004.

“Know your Enemy” should be their first opportunity. I want things to be different, yet recognisable, fun yet mature.  Green Day were a big thing for me when I was 14, I just hope they can wow me again, more so than their side projects.

Know Your Enemy is released in Mid-April.

Twitter can help, Just ask

4 Apr

Load of people know I use Twitter and about 70%(the non-tweeters) just don’t get it. They see similar methods on Facebook and Bebo and don’t understand it’s usefulness in today’s society. One of Twitters main features, is its ability to search, and that might be its best.

I went down to Xtravision to rent an Xbox game, and had no idea what to rent out. So like any other person I started rummaging through the boxes, looking for something that looked remotely interesting. But unlike any other person once I found something I liked through Twitter.

I saw Street Fighter IV, but I didn’t know that much about it to want to rent it. Who would I ask? None of my friends had the game, so I asked the people of Twitter

I popped out my N95, went into #Gravity, searched for “street fighter 4 fun” and I saw this tweet

“Street Fighter 4, I thought I would never enjoy playing this game, but it is a lot of fun!”

and

“Still laughing at the fun we had with Street Fighter 4 yestrday, and suprised how quickly we got to grips with it. Fun Gaming”

They are two things I want in a game. Easy to get into the game, and ultimately fun. You might ask “Why didnt you just Google it?" and the answer is simple. I wanted to know what real people think about it, not just game reviewing sites that are sometimes over-critical of games.

So you see kids, Twitter is not just a site. It’s a useful tool waiting to be utilized. There are so many things you can do with it that it would be stupid not to use it. Now I’m off to play some Street Fighter IV, to see if I really like it
